Chiang Mai Design Week 2026: Craft and Design Across the Old City
Thailand’s first design week belongs to Chiang Mai, not Bangkok. Launched in 2014 and run by the Creative Economy Agency, Chiang Mai Design Week takes over the old city for nine days each December, threading contemporary design through the city’s real strength: seven centuries of Lanna craft. The 2026 edition runs 5–13 December. The 2025 edition — the festival’s 11th, themed “LOCAL PLUS” — ran 6–14 December across 50-plus venues.

Where Bangkok’s festival showcases studios, Chiang Mai’s showcases makers. The programming leans on the north’s living craft economy — woodcarvers, ceramicists, weavers, silversmiths — paired with young Thai designers reworking those traditions. Recent editions have run a fashion programme (Pattern.ers), a fragrance showcase built on northern botanicals (Make Scents Make Sense), the LABBfest music series, and a Pop Market gathering more than 140 independent craft brands. UNESCO listed Chiang Mai as a Creative City for crafts and folk art in 2017, and this is the week that status is easiest to see.
The geography works in your favour. The Old Town cluster is compact enough to cover on foot or by bicycle, drifting between temple courtyards and gallery shophouses; Chang Moi–Tha Phae — the craft-shop streets between the moat and the river — is a ten-minute walk further; only Sanpakoi, across the Ping River, really needs a songthaew or Grab. Budget a relaxed day per district rather than sprinting the map.
Insider Tip: The night programming is the festival at its best — installations lit up in temple grounds, live sets, and open studios running late in December’s cool air. Do districts by day for the markets and workshops, then pick one cluster to revisit after dark. And book accommodation early: early December is already peak season in Chiang Mai before you add a festival.
One honest caveat: the deeper community programming — craft demonstrations, neighbourhood projects, some talks — often runs in Thai only, with English strongest at the flagship exhibitions. It rarely matters; most of the festival is visual, tactile, and shoppable. December in Chiang Mai stacks well beyond the festival too — the week typically lands just after Loy Krathong and Yi Peng season and pairs naturally with the Chiang Mai Flower Festival if you’re staying into February.
