Old Town by Phetchaburi’s River CBT

This community-based tourism programme links three neighbourhoods along the Phetchaburi River in the old town — Khlong Krachaeng, the riverside Talat Rim Nam market community, and the area around Wat Koh — into one set of locally run visits. It runs daily from 09:00 to 17:00 and charges no admission, but it isn’t a walk-in attraction: visits are arranged through the community’s own guides rather than a ticket window.

The activities are specific rather than a generic “village life” pitch. They include paying respects at Wat Mahathat Worawiharn, the old town’s principal temple; walking the community’s heritage streets; viewing the literature collection at Manat Chariyong House, the former home of a locally noted Thai writer; and watching nang yai (giant shadow puppet) craftsmanship at Wat Phlapphla Chai, one of the few places in the country still making the hide puppets by hand. The programme’s more unusual offering is a talk from residents who once dived the Phetchaburi River for old ceramics and coins washed downstream over generations — a local trade now folded into the tourism programme rather than practised commercially.

Phetchaburi’s old town carries a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation, and the walking route touches on that: a stop for hand-painted khanom ko, a traditional Chinese-Thai pastry, sits alongside the temple and craft visits rather than standing on its own.

Watch out: this only works if you book ahead. There’s no set tour time or drop-in option, and turning up without a pre-arranged guide means missing the parts that make the visit worthwhile — temple access with local context, the puppet-making demonstration, and the river-diving story. Contact the community’s tourism coordinator, listed with the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), in advance to arrange a guide and agree on which stops to include.

Insider Tip: if you only have time for one stop, ask specifically for the Wat Phlapphla Chai nang yai demonstration — the hide-puppet craft is genuinely rare and harder to see elsewhere in Thailand than the temple or market visits.
