Phattalung Botanical Garden

Phattalung Botanical Garden occupies a stretch of peat-swamp forest inside the Thale Noi non-hunting wildlife area in Khuan Khanun district, part of Phatthalung province in southern Thailand. It was established in 1994 as a conservation and research site rather than an ornamental park, and a 930-metre boardwalk trail is the main way to see it. Entry costs 100 THB for both foreign and Thai adults (children pay the same 100 THB, though Thai children get 20 THB), open daily 08:30-16:30.

The boardwalk winds through stands of melaleuca (paperbark) and other native wetland trees typical of the Thale Noi peat swamp, with labelled medicinal and herbal plants along the route explaining their traditional Thai uses. Because the site sits inside a protected non-hunting area rather than a manicured park, the paths feel more like a managed wild forest than a botanical showcase — expect boggy ground after rain rather than clipped lawns. Birdlife is part of the draw: Thale Noi itself hosts painted storks, purple herons and other waterfowl, and it’s common to hear them calling from the swamp beyond the tree line even without leaving the garden trail.

Insider Tip: Pair the garden with a longtail boat trip on Thale Noi lake next door — the garden gives you the forest-floor view of the wetland ecosystem, the boat gives you the open-water view with the birds and the lotus fields. Boatmen wait at the pier a short drive from the garden entrance.

Watch out: The trail has almost no shade on its open boardwalk sections, and southern Thailand’s midday sun is intense even in the cooler months. Visit before 10 AM or after 3 PM, and carry water — there’s no shop inside the garden itself.

The garden works best as a add-on to a Thale Noi day trip rather than a standalone destination — on its own it’s a modest 1-1.5 hour walk, but combined with a boat ride on the adjoining lake it fills a half-day. Bring insect repellent for the swampier stretches and wear closed shoes; the boardwalk can be slick after the region’s frequent afternoon rain.
