Pho Khun Ngam Mueang Monument

A half-life-size bronze of Pho Khun Ngam Mueang stands on a raised plinth along the lakeside road in Phayao, facing out over Kwan Phayao lake. He wears royal dress and a crown and holds a ceremonial sword — the standard iconography for the ninth ruler of the old Phukamyao kingdom, who reigned through the 13th century and is best remembered for a three-way blood-oath alliance with King Mangrai of Chiang Rai and King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, sealed at the Ing River. That pact is the reason Phayao gets mentioned in the same breath as Lanna and Sukhothai in Thai history, despite being the smallest of the three.

The statue sits opposite the open water, with history panels around the base explaining the alliance and Ngam Mueang’s role in founding the town. There’s no ticket booth and no closing gate in the way a temple has — it’s public lakeside ground, so the site itself is open beyond the 08:30-16:30 window even if that’s the “official” visiting time. Vendors selling drinks and snacks set up nearby most afternoons, and locals use the surrounding path for evening walks rather than treating it as a tourist stop.

Insider Tip: Come an hour before sunset. The statue faces the lake, so late light catches the bronze directly and the water behind it turns gold — a much stronger photo than a midday visit gives you.

Phayao holds an annual homage ceremony here around March 5th each year, a genuine local event rather than something staged for visitors — worth timing a trip around if you’re interested in how the city still honours its founder. Outside of that, the visit itself is brief: 15-20 minutes to read the panels and take photos, longer if you walk the lakeshore.

Watch out: Shade is limited right at the statue — midday visits in the hot season (March-May) get genuinely uncomfortable, so bring water and a hat if you’re not coming for the golden-hour light.
