Pran Buri Forest Park

A kilometre of raised wooden boardwalk carries visitors through the mangrove channels at Pran Buri Forest Park, one of the more accessible wetland reserves on the Gulf of Thailand coast. Established in 1982, the park keeps you dry above the mud and root systems that make most mangrove visits a slog, while still putting you close enough to watch mudskippers work the exposed banks at low tide. Entry is free, and the walk takes 30-50 minutes at an easy pace.

Herons and kingfishers work the shallow channels beneath the boardwalk — the park records four kingfisher species among the more than 110 bird types logged here, plus the Oriental plover, an uncommon winter visitor that draws birdwatchers specifically. Long-tailed macaques and monitor lizards turn up near the tree line away from the main path, and fiddler crabs scatter across the mudflats whenever the tide drops. Two observation towers along the route lift you above the canopy for a wider view across the wetland toward the Gulf.

At the western end of the boardwalk, operators rent long-tail boats for around 700 THB a trip to explore further along the Pran Buri River and connecting canals, sometimes as far as a nearby fishing harbour — a quieter way to see the mangroves than walking alone. Watch out: Mosquitoes are persistent even on the boardwalk, especially at dawn and dusk — bring repellent regardless of how dry your feet stay.

The park sits about 30 kilometres south of Hua Hin along Highway 4, signposted clearly off the main road, with parking at the entrance. Wear shoes with grip for the boardwalk planks, which get slick after rain, and bring water — there’s little shade once you’re out over open water sections of the walk.
