Haad Rin Beach Reviewed Jul 2026

Rin Nai Beach — Haad Rin Nai, or “Sunset Beach” — is the quiet side of the Haad Rin headland at the southern tip of Koh Phangan. It faces southwest, so it catches the sunset over Koh Samui, and it keeps the rustic feel of old Koh Phangan. It’s the calm counterpart to Haad Rin Nok, the wide sunrise beach on the other side where the Full Moon Party happens — the two are only a couple of minutes’ walk apart. Entry is free.

What it’s like

This is a beach for sunsets and sundowners more than swimming. It’s narrow, the sand thins out at high tide, and the bottom is rocky with coral fragments — fine for a paddle, less so for a proper swim. What it offers instead is the view: the sun dropping toward Koh Samui across the channel, and a quieter, more local strip of bars and guesthouses than the party beach next door. Because Haad Rin town is tiny, you’re never more than a short walk from restaurants, shops and the ferry pier.

Insider Tip: Stay on Haad Rin Nai and walk over to Haad Rin Nok for the day (and the party, if you want it). You get the sunset and the calm on your doorstep, and the soft-sand swimming beach two minutes away.

Getting there

Rin Nai is at Haad Rin on the south of the island, reached by road from Thong Sala (a steep, winding drive) or by the direct passenger ferry from Koh Samui that lands right here. Late afternoon is the time to be on the sand.

Watch out: The bottom is rocky and shallow in places — wear sandals for getting in, and don’t expect the postcard swimming of the island’s west-coast bays. The Thong Sala road over to Haad Rin is notoriously steep; take a taxi if you’re not a confident rider.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Haad Rin Nai and Haad Rin Nok?
They're the two beaches on the Haad Rin headland at the south of Koh Phangan. Haad Rin Nai (this one, "Sunset Beach") faces southwest — quiet, rustic, with views to Koh Samui and good sunsets. Haad Rin Nok ("Sunrise Beach") on the other side is the wide, sandy Full Moon Party beach. They're a short walk apart.
Can you swim at Rin Nai Beach?
Not brilliantly. It's narrow and the bottom is rocky with coral fragments, and at high tide the sand almost disappears in places. It's better for sunsets, a sundowner and a stroll than for a proper swim — for that, cross to the softer sand of Haad Rin Nok.
Why go to Haad Rin Nai?
For the calm and the sunsets. It keeps the rustic, old-Koh Phangan feel, faces the sunset over Koh Samui, and is still a two-minute walk from all of Haad Rin's restaurants, bars and the ferry — so you get the quiet without being cut off.
Is this where the Full Moon Party is?
No — the party is on Haad Rin Nok, the beach on the sunrise (east) side of the headland. Haad Rin Nai stays comparatively quiet even on party nights, which is part of why some people prefer to stay here.
When is the best time to visit?
December to February for the calmest, clearest water and reliable weather. Come to the beach in the late afternoon for the sunset, which is the main event here.
