Sadet Tia Krommaluang Chumphon Khetudomsak Shrine

Fishermen and naval families come to this shrine at the mouth of the Tapi River in Bang Kung subdistrict, Surat Thani, to pay respects to Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse — Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak, founder of the modern Royal Thai Navy and known to most Thais simply as “Sadet Tia,” the Father. This isn’t the country’s only shrine to him: the best-known sits at Hat Sai Ri in Chumphon province with the retired warship HTMS Chumphon beached beside it. This one, roughly 130 km south at the river mouth where the Tapi meets Bandon Bay, is a separate site maintained by the local fishing community — a reminder that shrines to revered figures like the prince cluster up and down the Gulf coast rather than existing in just one place.

The shrine sits where the Tapi widens toward the sea, giving it a broad river view that’s part of the draw on its own — locals describe the spot as “the end of the Tapi River” when giving directions. Around the shrine building, a run of seafood restaurants and souvenir stalls has grown up along the approach, along with vendors selling a local hot coconut-based sweet that’s specific to this stretch of riverbank. It functions as both a devotional stop and a low-key local hangout — as many people come for the river view and the food as for the shrine itself.

Visitors making merit here are typically connected to fishing or the navy, asking for safe passage or protection from storms, a tradition tied directly to the prince’s own reputation as a folk healer and protector of sailors during his lifetime. The atmosphere stays unhurried outside of major naval commemoration dates, when the crowd of devotees making offerings picks up noticeably.
