Thalane Bay

Thalane Bay is a limestone-karst inlet on Krabi’s coast near Ao Nang, threaded with narrow mangrove channels you paddle by kayak. There’s no admission charge for the bay itself, but there’s also no public boat or ferry access — a guided kayak tour, typically 849-900 THB per person for around 4.5 hours, is effectively the only way to see it.

The tours put you inside sea kayaks and send you through channels barely wider than the boat, mangrove roots arching overhead into a green tunnel that blocks most of the midday sun. The karst walls rise straight out of the water on either side, streaked with mineral deposits and hung with tropical vegetation. At low tide, narrow sandbars appear at the base of some cliffs, giving guides a spot to pull kayaks in for a break. It’s quieter water than the open sea around Ao Nang’s beaches, so paddling is easy even for people who’ve never held a kayak paddle before.

Insider Tip: Book the earliest departure your operator offers. Tours later in the day run into more boat traffic in the narrower channels, and the heat by midday in the shadeless open stretches is a real factor from March to May.

Watch out: Tide timing matters more here than at most Krabi attractions — some of the narrowest mangrove channels are only passable within a few hours either side of high tide, and operators will reroute or shorten the paddle if the water’s too low. Ask what the tide is doing on your date before booking if timing flexibility matters to you.

Most tours depart from Ao Nang or Krabi Town, with hotel pickup included in the price. Independent kayak rental isn’t a realistic option here — the bay’s channels wind through private mangrove concessions that tour operators have arrangements to access, and there’s no boat launch for casual visitors to put in on their own.
