The Institute of Marine Science of Burapha University

The Institute of Marine Science at Burapha University runs a public aquarium and marine science museum on Bang Saen beach — 44 saltwater display tanks from 0.5 to 200 cubic metres, plus exhibits on shells, fishing equipment, and ocean conservation. Entry is 220 THB for foreign adults (120 THB children), 80 THB for Thai adults (40 THB children); open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:30.

Experience

The aquarium section spans 44 saltwater tanks of varying size, from small nursery tanks up to large displays holding groupers, rays, and reef fish. A dedicated jellyfish zone is one of the most photographed corners — the animals are naturally translucent, and the colour comes entirely from the tank lighting rather than the jellyfish themselves. A touch tank lets visitors handle selected marine invertebrates under staff supervision. Upstairs, the Marine Science Museum splits into two halls: one covers King Rama IX’s fisheries and coastal-conservation projects, the other is a broader exhibition on ocean ecosystems and marine biology. A separate seashell museum and a display of traditional fishing boats and gear round out the site — this is a functioning university research centre as much as a visitor attraction.

Atmosphere & Timing

Expect a mix of school groups on weekday mornings and families at weekends; the galleries are air-conditioned, a welcome break from Bang Saen’s beach heat outside. Most visits run 1–2 hours. Feeding demonstrations run once a day on weekdays and twice on weekends and public holidays — check the schedule board at the entrance, since times vary.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings, right after the 09:00 opening, are the quietest window before school groups and weekend crowds arrive.

Watch out: The institute is closed on Mondays. Combine a visit with Bang Saen Beach, a short walk from the entrance, if Monday is the only day you have free.
