The Museum of Nonthaburi

The Museum of Nonthaburi occupies the old Nonthaburi Provincial Hall, a 1910 building by the pier that the Fine Arts Department registered as a protected ancient monument in 1981. Entry is free, Tuesday-Friday 09:00-17:00 and weekends/holidays 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays. Two floors and eight exhibition rooms cover the province’s history and everyday life along the Chao Phraya, run by Nonthaburi City Municipality rather than a national museum body.

The building itself is worth the visit independent of what’s inside — colonial-era provincial architecture from the reign of Rama VI, built originally under the Ministry of Justice before serving as the seat of provincial government. That’s the through-line of most of the exhibits too: how Nonthaburi grew from a riverside district into the province that now sits just north of Bangkok, told through the kind of local artefacts and photographs a municipal museum collects rather than a national-tier archaeological haul. Labelling runs in Thai and English.

Because the museum sits directly on the Chao Phraya, the visit pairs naturally with the rest of the riverside area — Nonthaburi’s pier, its market stalls, and the boats heading further up toward Koh Kret. Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Worawiharn, a riverside royal temple, is also close enough to combine with the same trip. Expect a fairly quiet, unhurried visit; this isn’t a stop that draws tour groups, and weekday mornings in particular tend to be just you and the building.

Insider Tip: get here by Chao Phraya Express Boat rather than by road — Tha Nam Nonthaburi pier is a few steps from the entrance, and the boat ride itself is part of the reason to make the trip.

Watch out: the museum is closed Mondays, and weekend hours differ from weekdays (10:00-18:00 vs 09:00-17:00) — check the day before you go, since a Monday trip means a wasted stop at a locked building.

Budget 1-2 hours for the eight rooms. Bring a bit of cash in case a donation box is out for the building’s upkeep, though there’s no admission charge. Photography is generally fine in the exhibition rooms; ask staff if a specific display is off-limits.
