Wat Chalong (Wat Chaithararam)

Wat Chalong (officially Wat Chaithararam) is the largest and most revered Buddhist temple on Phuket, in the south of the island. Entry is free and it’s open daily, roughly 07:00 to 17:00. Its centrepiece is a 60-metre golden chedi enshrining a fragment of the Buddha’s bone, and the temple is bound up with the memory of two healer-monks who guided Chalong through a 19th-century rebellion. It’s the island’s busiest temple for a reason — come dressed modestly.

What to see

The Phra Mahathat Chedi, built between 1991 and 2001, is the highlight: three levels of Buddha images leading up to a terrace with a view across the grounds, and the relic itself on display. Elsewhere, the ordination hall and shrines hold gilded statues of Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, the abbots who tended the wounded during the 1876 Angyi rebellion and are still venerated today. One distinctive custom is the firecracker kiln — visitors set off firecrackers to give thanks when a wish has come true, so the temple has a steady, celebratory crackle to it.

Insider Tip: Go early, before the tour coaches and the midday heat. You’ll get the chedi terrace and the statues in soft morning light and a calmer atmosphere for what is, first and foremost, an active place of worship.

Visiting

Free to enter, with ample parking, on Chao Fah West Road — an easy stop on a tour of southern Phuket, and a natural pairing with the Big Buddha on nearby Nakkerd Hill. Dress code is enforced: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off before entering the buildings.

Watch out: This is a living temple, not a museum — keep your voice down, don’t pose on or touch the statues and relics, and step around anyone at prayer.
