Wat Chang Lom Ancient Remains

A bell-shaped chedi rises from a square base ringed with carved elephants at this Wat Chang Lom ruin in the East Zone of Sukhothai Historical Park, outside the old city walls. It’s a separate, smaller site from the better-known Wat Chang Lom in Si Satchanalai, about an hour north — same name, same elephant-support design, different location. Entry is free, matching the rest of the East Zone.

Sukhothai’s Wat Chang Lom shares its elephant-ringed chedi design with two other period temples — the larger Si Satchanalai version and Wat Chang Rob in Kamphaeng Phet — but sees far fewer visitors than either, since it sits outside the walking loop most day-trippers stick to inside the Central Zone.

Experience

The central bell-shaped chedi, showing Ceylonese architectural influence typical of the Sukhothai period, sits on a stepped square platform carved with rows of elephants shown from the front half, as if bearing the structure’s weight. Around the chedi, foundation remains mark where a gallery, a viharn, and an ordination hall once stood, along with traces of a surrounding moat. Little of the original brickwork survives at full height, so this is a foundations-and-fragments site rather than a dramatic standing ruin — come for the elephant motif and the quiet, not for scale.

Atmosphere & Timing

Because it’s outside the old city walls and off the main Central Zone loop, this ruin gets a fraction of the foot traffic of Wat Mahathat or Wat Si Sawai. Shade is limited across the site, so the flat light and heat of midday make for a less comfortable visit than early morning or late afternoon.

Insider Tip: If you’re combining Sukhothai’s East Zone with a longer trip, Si Satchanalai Historical Park has the larger, better-preserved version of this same elephant-chedi design — worth the detour if you want the fuller version of what this ruin only hints at.

Watch out: Don’t rely on directions or reviews written for the Si Satchanalai Wat Chang Lom — many online descriptions of “Wat Chang Lom” conflate the two sites, and the elephant count, scale, and access details differ between them.

Practical

Bring water and sun protection — the East Zone has less tree cover than the Central Zone’s more manicured grounds, and there are no facilities directly at this ruin.
