Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (ARL) Guide

The Airport Rail Link is a fast, low-cost rail route from Suvarnabhumi into central Bangkok. The City Line takes about 30 minutes to Phaya Thai for 45 THB, then connects straight into the BTS Skytrain. At Makkasan, MRT Phetchaburi is reached by a short covered walk, which is useful for Sukhumvit, Silom and the old city edge. In rush-hour traffic the train can beat a taxi by both time and cost.

There is nothing to pre-book here — the Airport Rail Link is a commuter train, so treat this as a route guide rather than a product page. Buy a token at the machines, use the staffed counter if you need help, or tap a supported contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB or UnionPay card. If several long-haul flights land together, the machine queue can back up, but it moves quickly.

The station is in the basement level of Suvarnabhumi, below the arrivals floors. After baggage claim, follow the Airport Rail Link signs down rather than joining the taxi queue outside. Phaya Thai is the easiest change for BTS hotels; Makkasan works for MRT users but the interchange involves a short walk. If your hotel is not near either rail system, price the final taxi leg before deciding this is the best route.

This is the right route for solo travellers, couples with light luggage, and anyone staying near the BTS or MRT. It is less convenient for riverside hotels, Khao San Road, very late arrivals, or families carrying several suitcases. Insider Tip: The City Line runs from around 05:30 until midnight. If your flight lands after about 23:00, immigration and baggage can push you past the last train, so plan for a taxi, Grab or a private Bangkok airport SUV transfer instead.

Watch out: The trains have luggage racks, but peak-hour carriages get tight. If each person has a large suitcase, or if your hotel is far from a BTS/MRT station, the money saved can disappear into a second taxi ride from Phaya Thai.
