You need it for Grab, hotel messages, maps, TDAC confirmations, airline apps and LINE, and the airport SIM counters can have a queue when several flights land together. An eSIM removes that first small chore because the plan is installed before you fly and switched on after landing.

Do not buy an eSIM only because it is online. Compatibility depends on the exact device model, sales region and carrier lock; if your phone does not show an EID number when you dial *#06#, use a physical SIM card instead. Airport counters at BKK, DMK, HKT and CNX can set up a tourist SIM for you, and a physical SIM may include a Thai phone number that data-only eSIMs do not provide.
For most short trips, the practical setup is simple: buy the eSIM on home Wi-Fi, install it before departure, keep your home SIM active for calls and texts, then switch mobile data to the Thailand eSIM after landing. Do not activate the plan before you reach Thailand unless the provider specifically says the validity period starts only on network connection.
