Chiang Mai: Kayak the Jungle Rivers of Chiang Dao Valley

Chiang Dao Valley sits about an hour and a half north of Chiang Mai, and its jungle-lined rivers are the draw for this five-hour kayak trip, quieter than the day-trip elephant circuits and substantially wilder than anything you’ll paddle closer to the city. The paddle runs through sections of calm water under canopy and the occasional mild riffle, no whitewater experience needed, but the guide briefs you on basics before you put in. The hard-shell kayaks are a notable upgrade over the inflatable rafts most Chiang Mai river tours use: better tracking, easier paddling, more comfortable for the distance. Transport out is by air-conditioned van for bigger groups or 4x4 SUV for smaller ones, with vegetarian and vegan lunch options at the riverside restaurant. Water for hydration packs and bottled water are kept topped up through the day. The river runs fuller and faster in and after the wet season (June-November) and settles into gentler conditions the rest of the year.

Dry bag for phones is handy on the stretches with splash. Suitable for reasonably fit first-time paddlers and up; the single-kayak option wants more balance than the double.
