Doi Inthanon Private Tour with Trek & Lunch from Chiang Mai
Availability checked
Doi Inthanon is the highest peak in Thailand at 2,565 metres, and the cool climate at altitude brings something unusual for this latitude: Siamese sakura — wild Himalayan cherry — that blooms pink across the lower slopes between December and February. If you’re in Chiang Mai during those months, this is the mountain that rewards the drive. Private tour format means one vehicle, one guide, your own pace, and a 9am-to-6pm day instead of the fixed group-tour schedule.
Pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel runs by air-conditioned minivan. The drive to the park takes about two hours. On arrival, the focus is the two-hour guided nature trek along one of the park’s trails — Pha Dok Siew or Kew Mae Pan, depending on the season, with local guides from the nearby villages. The walk takes in the diversity of plants across different elevation bands, the Royal Project’s reforestation work, hill tribe agriculture on the terraces, bird-watching stops, and the geology of the caves that dot the slopes. Private lunch and bottled water are included between activities, along with stops at the King and Queen pagodas near the summit. The private format lets the guide flex — more time at the Hmong village, longer at the viewpoint, or a different trail if the weather closes one off.
Nine hours, rated challenging mostly for the trek. The Kew Mae Pan trail climbs through cloud forest and can be slick in the wet months; decent walking shoes beat trainers. The summit area sits above 2,000 metres and is cooler than Chiang Mai by 10°C or more — bring a fleece or light jacket year-round. National park and pagoda entrance fees aren’t in the base price.
Go December to February for the sakura, the clear summit views, and the cool-season weather. Outside that window, the cloud forest is still worth the trip but the pink blossom is the specific reason people book this one.
