This one’s for travellers who want to earn their downhill. An 11km jungle hike up through Doi Suthep National Park’s rainforest to a Hmong village at 1,400m, followed by a 14km mountain-bike descent to Lake Huay Tueng Thao. Nine hours door-to-door, with hotel pickup from your Chiang Mai base.

The day starts at 9:30am with a safety briefing and bike fitting at base camp before the shuttle drops you at Monthatan Waterfall. From there, a steady three-hour climb works its way through native Mai Yai forest to the summit village, where coffee tasting and a light lunch wait alongside your prepped mountain bike. The descent back down is two hours and drops more than 1,000 metres, sweeping through national-park trails with views across the Mae Ping Valley. A swim in Lake Huay Tueng Thao and a full meal wrap the active part before the return to town around 4:30pm. A hydration pack is provided; instructors are first aid and CPR certified.

You need reasonable fitness for the three-hour uphill with a pack, and basic mountain-bike confidence for the downhill. Not suitable for total beginners or anyone with knee issues. Bring sun protection, trail shoes and a swimsuit. Light hiking shoes, padded shorts and jerseys are available at the pro-shop. National Park fees, lake fees and insurance aren’t included; passport number required for insurance at check-in. Google Earth orientation at the pro-shop sets out the route before you head up. Coffee tasting at the Hmong village is a nice pause before the descent, worth asking about the small-holder growers. A support truck shadows the group on the downhill, carrying spares and any kit you’d rather not carry. A 4.7 rating across 204 reviews points at solid operational quality rather than marketing spin.
