Ban Ma, Lamphun

Ban Ma in Lamphun is the province’s furniture-making village: a cluster of workshops and roadside showrooms producing wooden furniture and home décor. Family-run businesses here turn teak, rubberwood and plywood into tables, cabinets, carved panels, beds and decorative pieces, much of it sold directly from the showrooms out front. This is a working production village rather than a tourist market, so the draw is browsing the furniture and watching the woodworking, not sightseeing.

Experience

The showrooms run for some distance along the road, each stacked with finished pieces, and you can usually see carpenters at work in the open-sided workshops behind them. Styles range from heavy traditional teak to lighter rubberwood and simpler flat-pack designs. Prices are generally lower than the furniture shops in Chiang Mai, about an hour to the north, which is why many buyers make the trip out specifically to order here. Larger items can usually be arranged for delivery or shipping, though terms vary workshop to workshop.

Nearly every household in the village has some stake in the trade, whether running a showroom, a workshop, or supplying timber and hardware to neighbours who do — this is a genuine cottage industry rather than a handful of shops dressed up for tourists.

Atmosphere & Timing

Insider Tip: If you’re commissioning a custom piece, ask specifically about the wood-drying method — kiln-dried hardwood holds its shape far better than green or air-dried timber once it’s back in an air-conditioned room, and not every workshop dries to the same standard.

Watch out: Quality and finish vary noticeably between showrooms despite similar prices — walk two or three before committing to a larger order, and check joinery on drawers and doors rather than just the visible surface.

Practical

Ban Ma sits a short distance from the Doi Ti junction in Mueang Lamphun district, easy to combine with a visit to Lamphun town and Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. Most showrooms are open through the day.
