Chan Sen Museum

Chan Sen Museum sits inside the Wat Chan Sen temple complex in Takhli district, Nakhon Sawan, housed on the ground floor of Phra Mahathat Chedi Si Chan Sen. Entry is free, and it’s open Wednesday to Sunday plus public holidays, 09:00-16:00.

Experience

The museum was founded by the temple’s former abbot, Phra Khru Nisai Chariyakun — known locally as Luang Pho Ot — who gathered artifacts recovered from excavations at the adjacent Chan Sen Ancient City, a moated Dvaravati-era settlement. The collection includes pottery figurines, clay lamps, seals, jewellery, stone tools, and skeletal remains, displayed across rooms covering the community’s history and development, local wisdom and lifestyle, and a room dedicated to Luang Pho Ot himself, centred on his statue for worship. The ceiling is painted with murals depicting the life of the Buddha and the history of Buddhism in the area, adding an artistic layer to the historical displays.

Atmosphere & Timing

This is a small, community-run museum rather than a polished city institution — expect quiet exhibition rooms and a temple setting rather than crowds. Student volunteers from Wat Chan Sen School and a neighbouring school run guided tours on weekends and public holidays, extending beyond the museum room out to the ancient city earthworks nearby; bicycles are available on site to cover that extra ground.

Insider Tip: Time a visit for Saturday or Sunday — that’s when the student-led tours run, taking you beyond the display cases to the Chan Sen Ancient City moat and wall remains themselves.

Watch out: The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday. Plan around a Wednesday-to-Sunday visit or you’ll find the gates shut.
