Chiang Khan Walking Street (Thanon Chai Khong)

Chiang Khan Walking Street runs along Chai Kong Road beside the Mekong River in Loei province, through the old town’s row of wooden shophouses roughly between Soi 6 and Soi 21. It’s open every evening, about 16:00 to 22:00, and free to walk — you only pay for what you eat or buy.

Vendors set up stalls in front of century-old timber buildings, selling grilled river fish, som tam, sticky rice, and other Isan dishes alongside handwoven textiles and locally made souvenirs. The street reflects Chiang Khan’s Lao-influenced border-town character rather than a generic night-market format — it’s one pedestrian lane, not a sprawling complex, so most visitors walk its length in an hour or two. Weeknights are noticeably quieter than Friday and Saturday, when both Thai tourists and locals from across the Mekong turn out in bigger numbers.

Insider Tip: Arrive by 17:00 if you want photos of the old shophouses without the evening crowd, then eat once the food stalls are in full swing after 18:00.

Watch out: Most vendors are cash-only, so stop at an ATM in town before you arrive — the street itself has limited card payment options.

Combine the walking street with an early-morning trip to Kaeng Khut Khu, the Mekong rapids just outside town, or a stop at the old Wat Tha Khaek temple nearby — both are easy additions to a Chiang Khan itinerary built around the evening market.
