Kaeng Khut Khu is a stretch of rapids on the Mekong River about 5km outside Chiang Khan, in Loei province. This isn’t a waterfall — there’s no single drop — but a wide, narrowing channel where the current pushes over sandstone, loud enough to hear from the car park. The opposite bank belongs to Laos. Entry is free, and the site is open daily from around 06:00 to 18:00.
The rapids look completely different depending on the season. From February through May, as the Mekong drops from its rainy-season peak, jagged sandstone humps and ridges break the surface across the width of the river — the shapes that give Kaeng Khut Khu (“narrow, compressed rapids”) its name. During the rainy months the same rocks disappear under faster, browner water, and the site becomes more about the sound and force of the current than the rock formations. Longtail boat operators run trips from the riverside car park, typically around 1,000 THB for a boat seating up to ten people and lasting about 90 minutes — book through a Chiang Khan guesthouse rather than trying to arrange one on the spot.
A small market sets up near the car park selling local snacks, grilled river fish, and sticky rice, and a handful of open-air restaurants overlook the water for anyone who wants to linger over a meal with the rapids as backdrop. Insider Tip: turn up in the hour before sunset — the light on the water and the hills across in Laos is better than at midday, and the day-trip crowds from Chiang Khan’s walking street have usually thinned out by then.
Watch out: this is a real river current running through exposed rock, not a shallow swimming pool. Wading in the shallows near the bank is common, but treat the main channel with the same caution you would any river with a strong flow — it isn’t a place to swim laps or dive from the rocks.
Getting here from Chiang Khan is straightforward: a tuk-tuk runs around 80 THB one-way, or you can drive or cycle out along Route 211, which hugs the river for most of the route. Combine the visit with Chiang Khan Walking Street in the evening or Chiang Khan Skywalk for an elevated view over the same stretch of Mekong.
