Hat Laem Charoen

Hat Laem Charoen sits at the mouth of the Rayong River, about 5 km south of central Rayong — the closest beach to the city. A river channel separates the sand from the town itself, which keeps the beach cleaner than you’d expect this close to an urban center, though nearby fishing activity and light industry mean the water isn’t crystal clear. Entry is free, and the beach is open daily from roughly 8am to 6pm.

The beach forms a sandbar where the river meets the sea, and it slopes more steeply than a typical shallow bay — wade in carefully rather than assuming a gentle shelf. Rental swimwear and basic water-sports gear are available near the sand. What sets Laem Charoen apart is less the swimming and more the fishing-community atmosphere: longtail boats bring in the day’s catch, and the surrounding area produces some of Rayong’s fish sauce and processed seafood. More than ten food-truck cafes line the beachfront, serving grilled seafood and drinks to a soundtrack of soft music and lapping waves, especially as the sun goes down.

Insider Tip: Come after 4pm rather than at midday. Laem Charoen functions as a working fishing beach during the day and turns into a locals’ sunset hangout in the evening, when the food trucks open and the light turns gold over the water.

Watch out: the steep drop-off near the shoreline catches some swimmers off guard, especially with young children. Stick to the shallower stretches near the main food-truck cluster if you’re unsure of the current.

Getting there means a short drive or motorbike-taxi ride from central Rayong; there’s no public bus route directly to the beach. Bring cash for the food trucks, sunscreen, and drinking water, and expect a working coastal atmosphere rather than a resort beach. Combine a visit with fresh seafood or a bottle of local fish sauce from the vendors nearby — it’s as much a food stop as a swimming spot. For a quieter, more conventional swimming beach, Hat Mae Ramphueng is a short drive further along the coast, while Rayong Old Town on Yomjinda Road makes an easy pairing back in the city.
