Hat Narathat

Hat Narathat is a 5-kilometre municipal beach on the Gulf of Thailand, about 1.5-2 km north of Narathiwat town centre. Unlike most Thai beaches, it’s shaded end to end by rows of planted casuarina pines rather than palms, which is what gives the park its distinctive, cool atmosphere even at midday. Entry is free and there’s no gate or fixed closing time.

The beach road runs the full length of the shoreline, lined with simple restaurants and shops selling grilled seafood and local snacks — the kind of place where families set up mats under the pines rather than sunbathe on the sand. Near the northern access point at Ban Bang Nara stands the province’s second central mosque, a three-storey Arabian-style building completed in 1981 with a large dome and a minaret for the call to prayer, worth a look even from outside if you’re walking the beach road.

At the southern tip, the beach narrows into a cape at the mouth of the Bang Nara River, where a fishing community moors traditional kolae boats — narrow wooden vessels with high, brightly painted prows unique to this part of southern Thailand. The river mouth hosts an annual kolae boat race, one of the few places in Thailand where you can watch the boats compete rather than just photograph them at rest. Narathiwat itself sits on the Gulf coast south of Pattani, roughly midway to the Malaysian border, and Hat Narathat is the province’s most accessible stretch of sand from the town centre.

Insider Tip: Walk (or drive) to the far southern end near the river mouth for the best view of the kolae boats and the fishing village life along the Bang Nara River — the crowds thin out considerably past the main restaurant strip.

Watch out: The open Gulf coast here can produce rip currents, particularly during the region’s rainy season. If you’re pulled out, swim parallel to the shore rather than fighting the current directly.
