Hosoponsin Museum

The Hosoponsin Museum occupies a room inside Wat Cherng Tha, a working Buddhist temple in Lop Buri’s Tha Hin subdistrict. The temple’s abbot, Phra Khru Sophon Thammarat, founded it in 1997 to house antiques the temple had accumulated over generations rather than a purpose-built civic collection — which is why the exhibits lean religious: Buddha images in bronze and wood, phra bot (painted cloth scrolls depicting the Buddha), scripture cabinets used to store palm-leaf manuscripts, ceremonial fans (taalapat) carried by monks, and antique ceramics donated by parishioners over the decades. Entry is free and the museum keeps regular temple hours, daily from 08:30 to 16:30.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the museum’s official opening on 30 January 2002, a detail the temple still notes with some pride — it’s a small, single-room museum rather than a major state collection, and royal attention at the opening was a genuine boost to its standing locally. Because it sits inside an active temple compound, don’t expect the climate-controlled, gallery-style presentation of a national museum: cases are modest, labeling leans Thai-first, and staff are temple volunteers rather than professional curators.

Insider Tip: Ask a temple volunteer to point out the phra bot paintings specifically — they’re the museum’s most distinctive holding and easy to walk past if you don’t know to look for them among the ceramics.

Plan 30-45 minutes here; it’s a single room rather than a multi-hall complex, so this pairs naturally with the temple visit itself and a walk around Lop Buri’s old town rather than standing as a half-day destination. Modest dress is appropriate since it’s inside a temple, though there’s no strict enforcement.

Watch out: There’s minimal English signage. If you don’t read Thai, the visual collection still rewards a look, but you’ll get more out of it with a Thai-speaking companion or a translation app for the information cards.
