Wichayen House

Wichayen House is a European-style mansion in central Lop Buri, built in 1685 to house French envoys visiting the court of King Narai the Great. It takes its name from the man who ended up living there: Constantine Phaulkon, a Greek-born advisor who rose to become Narai’s treasurer and chief minister, holding the Thai title Chaophraya Wichayen.

Phaulkon’s position gave him unusual influence over Siam’s relations with France during the 1680s, and this house — a few hundred metres north of Phra Narai Ratchaniwet, the king’s palace, and just west of Phra Prang Sam Yot — was where much of that diplomacy played out. The arrangement didn’t survive Narai’s death: Phaulkon was executed in 1688 after a palace coup, and the brief period of close Franco-Siamese ties his role represented ended with him. What remains today is the shell of that history — European-style brick walls and window openings alongside the restored ruins of what would have been a working diplomatic residence, rather than a fully furnished museum interior.

Watch out: the site is closed Monday and Tuesday, which trips up visitors who assume every Lopburi historical site keeps the same daily hours as the palace grounds — check before building it into a tight itinerary.

Lopburi’s historical core is compact enough to cover on foot: Wichayen House, Phra Narai Ratchaniwet, and Phra Prang Sam Yot all sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other, and the combo ticket is built for exactly that loop.
