Huai Khi Lek Reservoir

Huai Khi Lek Reservoir is an irrigation reservoir in Nikhom Kham Soi district, about 23 km from Mukdahan town on Route 212 towards Loeng Nok Tha. It’s a working water-management site rather than a designed park — no ticket booth, no facilities beyond a shoreline road, just an open lake ringed by rice paddies and low hills.

The appeal here is entirely low-key: still water, open sky, and few other visitors. Local anglers fish from the banks with their own rods — there’s no tackle rental, so bring gear if you plan to cast a line. Egrets and other waterbirds work the shallows in the early morning and late afternoon, when the light is best for photos and the heat hasn’t built up yet. Rice paddies run along the access road on the approach, and it’s common to see water buffalo grazing near the water’s edge outside the growing season. There’s no swimming infrastructure and no lifeguard — this is a working reservoir, not a beach.

Insider Tip: Combine the visit with Phu Mu Forest Park, a hilltop viewpoint a couple of kilometres away in the same district — it adds a proper view over the reservoir and surrounding farmland that you don’t get from the shoreline itself.

Weekday visits are the quietest; locals use the reservoir edge for evening walks and picnics, so weekend afternoons see more traffic than weekday mornings. The cool season (November–February) brings the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for walking the shoreline — expect haze and more humidity outside that window. There’s minimal shade along the water, so bring sun protection and your own drinking water regardless of season.

Getting here without your own transport is the main obstacle: local songthaews run along Route 212 but don’t stop directly at the reservoir, so a rented car or motorbike from Mukdahan town gives far more flexibility. There’s nowhere to buy food or water on site, so stock up before you leave town. This isn’t a destination to build a day around, but if you’re already in Nikhom Kham Soi district or passing through on Route 212, it’s a genuine, uncommercialised slice of rural Isan with zero entry cost.
