Jomtien is Pattaya’s southern beach, a few kilometres past Pattaya Beach and noticeably calmer — fewer beach-bar touts, more families and long-stay residents, and enough open sand for both sunbathers and a serious windsurfing scene. Part of the current width is new: a government sand nourishment project widened a 3.5 km stretch to an average of 50 metres, handed over to Pattaya City for upkeep in 2022, and a second 318-million-baht phase is now underway (2024-2026) adding 30-50 metres of sand along another 2.85 km section further south, worked in 300-metre segments. If you visit while phase two is active, expect construction fencing around whichever stretch is being worked on that month.
Windsurfing and kitesurfing are Jomtien’s real specialty rather than a side activity — the beach has a long-established scene with rental shops and instructors used to complete beginners, and afternoon sea breezes make conditions fairly reliable, best from November to March when winds average around 15 knots. Parasailing operators also launch from the sand. Away from the water, it’s a straightforward beach-day setup: rented sunbeds and umbrellas, vendors selling fruit and drinks, and beachfront restaurants for grilled seafood.
Insider Tip: If phase two nourishment work has fenced off your usual stretch, walk further south past Soi Jomtien 10 — the completed phase-one section (roughly Jomtien Chalet to U Jomtien Pattaya Hotel) is the widest, most finished part of the beach right now.
Watch out: “Free, 08:00-18:00” in our records reflects managed beach-cleaning and vendor hours rather than a locked gate — the sand itself is open access, but water-sports rentals and lifeguard presence generally follow daytime hours, so don’t expect facilities after dark.
- Entry: Free; sunbeds, umbrellas, and water-sports gear rented separately
- Nourishment project: Phase 1 complete 2022 (avg. 50m wider, 3.5 km); phase 2 in progress through 2026 (30-50m wider, 2.85 km)
- Best for wind sports: November-March, afternoon sea breeze, ~15 knots average
- Getting there: Songthaew or taxi a few km south of central Pattaya
Jomtien works well paired with a look at Pattaya Beach itself for contrast, or a short hop south to Ao Dong Tan if you want an even quieter stretch of sand. Both sit within the Pattaya area.
