A reconstructed tunnel section and a diorama of hydraulic mining — the technique of blasting hillsides apart with water jets to expose ore — form the historical core. From there the museum shifts into social history: the “Secret Pearl of Andaman” gallery displays jewellery, jade and combs carved from buffalo horn, while “Journey of Chinese Merchants” recreates a period Phuket street complete with an old-style pharmacy, vintage sewing machines and wax figures staged as a traditional Peranakan wedding. An old wooden sorng-taeo (passenger truck) sits in the courtyard outside.

Watch out: several booking-site listings claim this museum sits inside “Phuket Town” proper — it doesn’t. Kathu is a separate district, and confusing the two could throw off your day’s route planning if you’re stacking it with old-town sights on foot rather than by scooter or taxi.

Getting here works best with your own transport — a rental scooter or taxi from central Phuket Town takes roughly 15-20 minutes, and there’s no direct public bus route to the museum gate.
