Khon Kaen Zoo
สวนสัตว์ขอนแก่น
Khon Kaen Zoo covers 3,338 rai of Khao Suan Kwang mountain in Khao Suan Kwang district, about 45 minutes north of Khon Kaen city. Opened in 2013 as the seventh zoo under Thailand’s Zoological Park Organization, it’s a genuinely large site — closer in scale to Nakhon Ratchasima’s zoo than a small provincial collection.
The animal list leans toward big, recognisable species rather than a narrow regional focus: giraffes, white lions, white rhinoceros, pygmy hippos, meerkats, monkeys, and the standard lions-and-tigers pairing, alongside emu, ostrich, flamingo, and hippopotamus enclosures. A walk-through bird aviary lets you get close to the resident bird life without cage bars between you. The zoo added its own water park in 2014, which makes a practical break on a hot-season visit — bring a swimsuit if you plan to use it, since it’s not a small splash pad.
Insider Tip: Go in the first two hours after opening. Animals are more active before the mid-morning heat sets in, and by early afternoon several enclosures’ occupants retreat to shade and stay there until the gates close at 16:30.
Watch out: The site is spread across mountain terrain, not a flat, compact layout — plan for a fair amount of walking or budget for the internal transport if it’s running. Foreign-visitor pricing here (350 THB adult) is roughly 3.5x the Thai rate, standard practice at Thailand’s state-run zoos and national parks.
Getting here requires your own transport — a car or motorbike from Khon Kaen city, about 45 minutes on Route 2109 into Khao Suan Kwang district. Bring sun protection, comfortable shoes, and water; shade is inconsistent between enclosures. If snakes are more your interest than the zoo’s general collection, King Cobra Village in nearby Nam Phong district is a specialised alternative worth combining with the trip.
