King Cobra Village

King Cobra Village — formally Ban Khok Sa-Nga — is a village in Nam Phong district, about 50km north of Khon Kaen city, built around a tradition of live king cobra demonstrations. A local doctor, Ken Yongla, started the show in 1951 to bring visitors and income to the area, and handlers here have kept it running since. The daily show takes place at the village temple, Wat Si Thamma, from 09:00 to 17:00. There’s no official entrance fee, but donations to the handlers are strongly encouraged and go directly toward the tradition’s upkeep.

The show centres on handlers working with live king cobras — the world’s longest venomous snake species — demonstrating traditional techniques for approaching, moving, and calming the animals. You’ll see the hood display, hear the distinctive hiss when a snake is alert, and get commentary from handlers on cobra behaviour, diet, and the role these snakes play in local folklore and the surrounding ecosystem. It isn’t a polished tourist show — it’s closer to watching a skill that’s been passed down through a handful of families in one village.

Watch out: this is not a petting-zoo experience. King cobras are venomous and the demonstrations happen at close range; follow the handlers’ instructions on distance, and skip bright clothing or strong perfume, which can agitate the snakes.

The rural setting keeps the experience feeling grounded rather than staged — you’re in a working village, not a purpose-built attraction complex. Handlers have spoken publicly about the tradition struggling to survive as younger residents move away from snake-handling work, which makes a donation here more meaningful than at a typical paid attraction. Getting there requires your own transport — car or motorbike from Khon Kaen via Mittraphap Road (Highway 2) — as there’s no direct public transport link. Bring a zoom lens if you want good photos from a safe distance, and wear closed shoes.
