Le Stegodon Cave

Le Stegodon Cave is a 4-kilometre sea cave cutting through the limestone karst of Thung Wa district, on the Satun mainland — not, despite some listings floating around online, on the island of Koh Sukorn in neighbouring Trang province. It sits inside the Satun UNESCO Global Geopark, and the only way through it is by kayak, on a tour booked in advance.

The cave takes its name from Stegodon, a prehistoric elephant relative whose fossils turned up in the surrounding rock, part of the same geological record that earned the wider area its Geopark status. Tours depart from Tha Aoy Pier by longboat to the cave mouth, where the group switches to kayaks — one person per boat, each fitted with a life vest and headlamp — for the paddle through the passage. There’s no walking route and no self-guided option; every visit goes out with a guide from the Thung Wa Tambon Administrative Organisation, which controls both the schedule and the group sizes.

Inside, the cave opens and narrows in turns, water dripping from the ceiling and the paddle strokes echoing off close rock walls in places. It’s a slower, quieter experience than a walk-through limestone cave — more sea kayaking with a roof than a cave tour in the usual sense, and the appeal is as much the geology and the fossil history as the paddle itself.

Insider Tip: Groups of around 8 get the standard per-person rate; if you’re travelling with fewer people, expect to either pay a higher flat rate split between your group or wait to be added to another booking on the same day.

Watch out: This isn’t a spontaneous stop — book ahead through the tambon administrative organisation rather than turning up at Tha Aoy Pier expecting a same-day trip.

Dry season, November to April, gives the calmest sea conditions for the crossing to the cave mouth and the clearest light for photos inside. Bring quick-dry clothing since you will get wet, and expect the whole outing, pier to pier, to run a few hours including the shuttle bus back.
