Lilit Phra Lo Park
อุทยานลิลิตพระลอ (วัดพระธาตุพระลอ)
Lilit Phra Lo Park sits in Ban Klang subdistrict of Song district, Phrae — about 52km and a 44-minute drive from Phrae town — built around one of Thai literature’s most-studied classical epics. Lilit Phra Lo, composed in the early Ayutthaya period, tells of Prince Phra Lo of Mueang Suang, drawn by enchantment toward two princesses of Mueang Song, Phra Phuea and Phra Phaeng. Entry is free, open daily 08:00-18:00.
The park is a purpose-built cultural site rather than an archaeological ruin, standing beside Wat Phra That Phra Lo. Statues of Phra Lo and the two princesses mark the grounds, alongside a sculpted recreation of the cave belonging to Pu Chao Sming Phrai — the spirit figure whose magic, worked through the princesses’ attendants Nang Ruen and Nang Roi, sets the tragic plot in motion. Local cultural events periodically retell the legend here and invite visitors to ask blessings at Pu Chao Sming Phrai’s shrine, a tradition still observed by residents of Song district.
This is a modest, rural site rather than a major museum — worth the drive if you know the story or want to see how a centuries-old poem still shapes local identity, less essential if you’re simply passing through northern Thailand. Mornings bring the most comfortable temperatures and the best light for photographing the statues among the mature trees on the grounds.
Insider Tip: Read a summary of the Lilit Phra Lo story before you go — the statues and the Pu Chao Sming Phrai cave replica mean far more once you know who Phra Phuea, Phra Phaeng, and the spirit figure actually are.
