Mount Chagun

Khao Chakan rises abruptly from the rice plains of Sa Kaeo, three limestone peaks reaching 240 metres at the highest point — visible from Highway 317 long before the turnoff. Entry is free, and the grounds open daily from 06:00 to 18:00. Most visitors come for one of two things: the cave temple built into the rock, or the evening bat flight that pours out of the mountain at dusk.

Wat Tham Khao Chakan occupies the mountain’s main cave system, though only one chamber — Tham Thalu, the “cave-through” — is open to the public. A wooden staircase climbs to the Chong Khao Thalu viewpoint, where a natural opening in the rock frames the paddy fields and villages of Khao Chakan district below. Inside the cave, Buddha images sit in cool, still air that drops noticeably below the heat outside. Wild monkeys live around the base of the mountain and the adjoining arboretum, and they’ll take food from your hand if you let them — better not to.

Between roughly 17:30 and 18:30, depending on the season, hundreds of thousands of bats stream out of the cave openings in long ribbons against the sunset as they head out to feed. It’s the single most-photographed moment at Khao Chakan and worth timing a visit around, especially if the climb itself doesn’t appeal. Mornings are quieter and cooler for the walk up to the viewpoint — by mid-morning in the hot season, the exposed rock stairs get uncomfortable fast.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for late afternoon — climb the viewpoint stairs before 17:00 while it’s still cool, then wait near the cave mouths for the bat exodus at sunset. Doing both in one trip saves a second visit.

Watch out: The monkeys around the base are used to being fed by visitors and can get pushy about food. Keep snacks packed away and out of sight.

Getting here is straightforward with your own transport: from Sa Kaeo town, take Highway 317 (the Sa Kaeo–Chanthaburi road) north for about 17 km, and the mountain comes into view on the left well before the entrance. Public songthaew services run infrequently, so a car or motorbike gives more flexibility — especially useful if you want to stay through sunset for the bats. Bring water and sturdy shoes for the staircase; there’s parking and clean restrooms at the temple grounds.

Nearby, Wat Tum Khao Chakan covers the same cave-temple complex in more depth, and the Khao Chakan Arboretum at the mountain’s base has marked trails through the forest where the monkeys live. Sa Kaeo town is the nearest hub for hotels and restaurants.
