Nai Dok Nai Thong Kaeo Monument

Nai Dok Nai Thong Kaeo Monument, on school grounds in Ban Makham, Wiset Chai Chan district, honours two of the fighters who defended the village of Bang Rajan against Burmese forces in 1766, the year before Ayutthaya fell. The brass memorial is free to visit and open daily from 8am to 5pm.

Experience

Nai Dok and Nai Thong Kaeo were among the villagers of Bang Rajan who held off repeated Burmese assaults for months during the siege that preceded the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767. The gilded brass figures stand on a pedestal in front of a school beside Wat Wiset Chai Chan. Then-Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn — now King Rama X — formally opened the monument on 25 March 1977, and a commemoration ceremony for the district’s war dead is still held on the same site every 25 March.

Atmosphere & Timing

This is a modest roadside memorial rather than a standalone destination: most visitors see it in five or ten minutes while stopping at Wat Wiset Chai Chan next door. It’s quietest outside the annual 25 March ceremony, when local crowds gather for the commemoration.

Practical

The monument sits along the Ang Thong–Wiset Chai Chan road, in Ang Thong province. There’s no visitor centre or English-language signage on site — background on the two heroes comes from the district’s own history rather than posted plaques.

Insider Tip: Combine the stop with Wat Wiset Chai Chan a few steps away — the monument itself doesn’t warrant a special trip on its own, but it’s a natural add-on if you’re already at the temple.

Watch out: Don’t expect an on-site museum or English information boards; read up on the Bang Rajan story before you go if the history is the reason for visiting.
