Namtok Bang Pae

Namtok Bang Pae sits inside Khao Phra Thaeo protected forest in Pa Khlok subdistrict, Thalang — the patch of old-growth rainforest that covers Phuket’s northeast interior. It is one of the more accessible falls on the island: a short, level trail from the car park reaches the base pool in about 10-15 minutes, rather than the longer multi-tier climbs some of Phuket’s other waterfalls demand.

Water drops over granite rock in a modest single cascade rather than a tall multi-tier fall, feeding a pool at the base that is deep enough for swimming when flow is good. Flow peaks during the rainy season, roughly May through November; outside that window the fall can thin to a trickle, so time a visit for after rain if swimming is the goal. The surrounding forest is the real draw beyond the water itself — hornbills, macaques, and, occasionally, wild gibbons move through the canopy, since Khao Phra Thaeo is one of the last stretches of Phuket’s original lowland rainforest.

Right by the Bang Pae trailhead sits the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, a rescue and rehabilitation centre for gibbons taken from illegal captivity, working to release animals back into this forest once they can survive independently. Entry to the centre is separate from the waterfall fee, and most visitors combine the two on the same stop since they share a car park.

Insider Tip: Arrive before 10am on weekends — the car park is small and fills up once the gibbon centre’s morning visitors arrive alongside waterfall-goers.

Watch out: Outside the rainy season the falls can run low, sometimes to little more than a trickle over the rocks. Check recent rainfall or ask locally before making the trip purely to swim.

Pair the visit with the gibbon centre next door, and if time allows, Wat Phra Thong or Wat Phranang Sang — both Thalang temples a short drive from the same stretch of road.
