Namtok Ti Lo Cho

Namtok Ti Lo Cho is a curtain-style waterfall roughly 80 metres high on a tributary of the Mae Klong River, about 3 km from Umphang town in Tak province, within the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary. Rather than crashing down as a single torrent, the water scatters into fine spray on the way down — closer to a curtain of rain than a powerful cascade, which is where its Thai nickname, namtok sai fon (“rain-curtain waterfall”), comes from.

Almost nobody visits Ti Lo Cho on its own. It’s reached by raft or longtail boat along the Mae Klong River from Umphang town, about 30 minutes each way, and is normally treated as a stop on the route to the much larger Thi Lor Su Waterfall further into the sanctuary — operators bundle the two into the same day. A roughly 1.8 km nature trail loops around the site for anyone who wants more than the viewing point. On clear winter mornings, between about 9:00 and 10:30, sunlight through the mist throws a rainbow across the falls.

Watch out: Ti Lo Cho regularly gets confused with Thi Lo Su, and older write-ups have called it “Thailand’s tallest waterfall” — that title belongs to Thi Lo Su, a much larger multi-tier fall a few kilometres further in. Ti Lo Cho is smaller and mist-like, worth seeing in its own right, but don’t go expecting the country’s biggest cascade.

Getting to Umphang itself is the real logistical hurdle — around four hours from Mae Sot on Highway 1090, a mountain road with well over a thousand curves. From there, Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary closes its vehicle road into the Thi Lo Su and Ti Lo Cho area for roughly three months each year, 1 June to 30 September, when access shifts to a longer raft-and-trek combination. Outside that window, a local rafting or trekking operator in Umphang handles the logistics for both waterfalls together.

Insider Tip: ask your raft operator to slow down at Ti Lo Cho rather than treating it as a five-minute stop on the way to Thi Lo Su — most day trips rush past it, but the mist and rainbow effect, best in the cool-season mid-morning, are worth lingering for.
