Puek Tian Beach sits on the Gulf of Thailand coast in Phetchaburi province, just north of Cha-am, and its reason to visit stands in the water rather than on the sand: a set of giant statues built from the story of Phra Aphai Mani, Sunthorn Phu’s 48,700-line 19th-century epic poem. The centrepiece is Phi Suea Samut, a sea giantess from the poem shown as an enormous figure rising out of the shallows, alongside a mermaid and other characters from the same story. A large turtle statue and a Kuan Yin figure stand nearby.
At low tide the water recedes enough to walk out toward the statues’ bases; at high tide they stand further offshore and are best seen from the beach itself. Either way, this is what separates Puek Tian from the run of quiet, unremarkable Gulf coast beaches nearby — without the statues, there would be little reason to single it out from any other stretch of sand between Cha-am and Phetchaburi town.
Away from the statues, the beach itself is a working stretch of coast rather than a resort strip — small fishing boats, a scattering of simple seafood shacks, and coconut palms along the back of the sand. It’s markedly quieter than Cha-am or Hua Hin a short drive south, with minimal tourist infrastructure.
Insider Tip: Time your visit around low tide if getting close to the statues matters to you — check tide tables before setting out, since Gulf tides shift the walkable distance by tens of metres.
Watch out: There’s little shade or facilities directly around the statues themselves; bring your own water and sun protection rather than counting on beachside vendors being nearby.
