Sgt. Maj. Thawee Folk Museum in Phitsanulok is a private collection of rural Thai household and farming tools, textiles and photographs spread across five traditional buildings on Wisut Kasat Road. Entry is 50 THB for foreign visitors, open daily 08:30-16:30 (closed Mondays).

The museum was built by Sergeant Major Thawee Buranaket, who spent decades collecting everyday objects — wooden furniture, ceramics, cooking utensils, ceremonial items — that document how ordinary people in Phitsanulok province lived before mass production. Almost directly across the road, the same founder also runs the Buranathai Buddha Casting Foundry, where bronze Buddha images are still cast by the lost-wax method — the two sites are usually visited as a pair.

Experience

The collection runs through five traditional-style Thai buildings, with old photographs of rural life, hand-woven textiles, farming and fishing tools, and traditional medicine equipment, labelled in both Thai and English. Across the road at the foundry, visitors can watch craftsmen pour molten bronze into clay moulds — larger Buddha images take a year or more to complete, and photo displays explain each stage of the process.

Insider Tip: Do the foundry first if it’s a working day — casting happens in stages and isn’t always in progress, so ask what’s scheduled before committing your time, then browse the museum while you wait.

Atmosphere & timing

Budget an hour to 90 minutes for the museum itself. It’s a quiet, unhurried stop — no crowds, no queue, and air conditioning in parts of the buildings makes it a reasonable midday break from Phitsanulok’s heat.

Watch out: The museum is closed on Mondays — check before making the trip out, especially if you’re combining it with a single day in Phitsanulok.
