Silpa Bhirasri Memorial National Museum

The Silpa Bhirasri Memorial National Museum sits inside the Fine Arts Department compound on Na Phrathat Road, next to the National Museum Bangkok and a short walk from the Grand Palace, in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district. Entry is free, weekdays 09:00–16:00 only, and the collection is small and specific: work by the students of Corrado Feroci, and the personal belongings of Feroci himself.

Feroci was a sculptor born in Florence in 1892 who arrived in Siam in 1923 to teach Western sculpture technique to Thai students. In 1933 he founded the Silpakorn School, which grew into Silpakorn University in 1943 — Thailand’s first fine arts university — and along the way he took the Thai name Silpa Bhirasri and Thai citizenship. He’s remembered today as the father of modern Thai art for training the country’s first generation of Western-trained sculptors and for designing several of Bangkok’s public monuments himself, including a scale model of the Democracy Monument that’s part of the museum’s collection.

The museum is laid out in two parts. The section nearer the entrance shows contemporary work by artists Bhirasri taught — paintings, sculpture and prints that carry his Western technique into Thai subject matter. The second room is more personal: his actual worktable, chair, typewriter, record player and sculpting tools, kept much as he left them. It opened to the public on 15 September 1984, the 92nd anniversary of his birth, and was formally established as a national museum in 1987.

Insider Tip: Because it’s closed weekends, weekday-only visitors get one of central Bangkok’s quietest museum experiences — there’s rarely another visitor in the room with you, which is not something you can say about the Grand Palace ten minutes’ walk away.

Set aside 30-60 minutes; this isn’t a museum you linger in for hours. Combine it with the National Museum Bangkok next door and Wat Mahathat nearby to make a full morning of Phra Nakhon’s museum cluster, and go on a weekday — turning up on a Saturday means finding the gate locked.
