Talat Kao Hong

Talat Kao Hong is a century-old wooden market strung along the Suphan Buri (Tha Chin) river in Bang Pla Ma district, open daily from roughly 08:00 to 16:00 — though what you find depends heavily on which day you show up. Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays bring out noticeably more vendors than an ordinary weekday, when the market runs quiet and a fair share of the wooden shopfronts stay shuttered.

The name itself is a piece of local history: “Kao Hong” means “nine rooms,” after a nine-room traditional Thai house owned by a local dignitary on the opposite bank, which gave the market its identity long before the current wooden shophouses went up. A watchtower built to guard against river bandits still stands over the row of shops, and the market’s layout — narrow wooden buildings facing the water, boats once the main way in and out — reflects its origin as a waterway trading post rather than a roadside market. Like many of Suphan Buri’s old riverside markets, it thrived when the river carried the province’s trade and has scaled down since transport shifted to the roads.

On a market day, expect fresh Tha Chin river fish, seasonal produce, and Suphan Buri-style snacks from the stalls still trading, alongside a scattering of handicrafts. A small on-site community museum displays antique household tools and equipment from the market’s trading years — it opens weekends by appointment rather than daily, so call ahead if that’s the draw for you.

Watch out: Don’t plan a special weekday trip expecting a market in full swing — the busy version of Kao Hong happens on weekends and public holidays, and a Tuesday afternoon visit will show you a much quieter riverside street with half the stalls closed.
