Talat Pho Phraya

Talat Pho Phraya is a free riverside market on the Tha Chin River in Suphan Buri’s Pho Phraya subdistrict, open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Traders have worked this bank since 1925, not long after the Pho Phraya Dam went in upstream and turned the spot into a natural stopping point for boats moving goods toward Suphan Buri town.

The market’s signature dish is Pho Phraya rice noodles, sold from four riverside stalls that each keep their own broth going — clear, spicy, or dark, depending on which stall you land at. Around them, vendors lay out fresh river shrimp and fish caught nearby, seasonal vegetables, and nam prik chili pastes made in-house. Cooked snacks and desserts fill the gaps between the produce tables, and the smell of simmering broth carries along the whole row of stalls by midday.

Insider Tip: Come after 15:00 if you want to see the market at its busiest — locals still call this the “evening riverside market” from its old trading pattern, and the noodle stalls are working at full pace by late afternoon while the morning hours are comparatively quiet.

None of the current buildings are original. A fire in 1997 damaged part of the market, and a second fire in 2004 destroyed 41 of the old wooden shophouses outright. What stands today is a rebuilt block of 81 commercial units in a two-and-a-half-storey structure, right where the wooden market once stood on the riverbank. It’s a working market, not a restoration project, so don’t expect period architecture — the value here is the food and the river setting, not the buildings.

Bring small bills — most stalls are cash-only and don’t expect change for large notes. There’s no shade over the open riverside tables, so a hat helps if you’re eating outdoors in the middle of the day. Combine the visit with Suphan Buri, a short drive from both the National Museum and the Banharn-Jamsai Tower, Suphan Buri’s tallest landmark — an easy loop for a half-day in town.
