Thai Water Buffalo Preservation Village

Ban Anurak Khwai Thai is a working buffalo farm and small educational centre off Si Prachan Road in Suphan Buri, built around Thailand’s history of using water buffalo to plough rice paddies before machinery took over. The farm side is straightforward: paddocks, a mud wallow, a small museum of old farm tools, and staff who explain how buffalo were harnessed and worked.

Alongside that, the venue runs daily trained buffalo performances and offers paid buffalo rides — activities pitched at family day-trippers rather than at the conservation angle its name suggests. That’s worth knowing before you go: a “preservation village” name implies sanctuary-style, observation-only care, but the actual visitor experience mixes genuine agricultural-heritage content with paid animal rides and a show.

Watch out: If animal welfare matters to you, the riding and performance elements here sit closer to standard Thai buffalo-show attractions than to a rescue sanctuary. We’d recommend skipping the rides and shows and sticking to the farm-demonstration and museum side, or choosing a straightforward working-farm visit elsewhere that doesn’t offer riding at all.

Feeding the buffalo and watching the plowing demonstration are the least fraught parts of a visit — genuinely informative about how rice farming worked before tractors, and low-impact on the animals involved. Guides talk through buffalo behaviour and the breed’s role in rural Thai life, and it’s easy to spend an hour on the farm-heritage side alone without touching the ride or show queue.

Bring closed shoes for farm terrain and expect mud near the wallow. The nearby Wat Ban Krang is in the same Si Prachan district if you’re combining stops on a day out from Suphan Buri town.
