Tham Pha Tup Forest Park

Tham Pha Tup Forest Park protects a limestone outcrop about 12 km north of Nan town on Highway 1080, the Nan-Pua-Thung Chang road, around the km 9-10 marker. The park covers roughly 528 rai (84 hectares) and holds a cluster of named caves rather than a single cavern — Tham Pha Tup itself, along with Tham Phra, Tham Bia, Tham Chedi Kaeo, Tham Khon, and Tham Pha Sawan, each reached by a short section of trail.

Inside, expect the usual limestone features — stalactites, stalagmites, and column formations built up over a very long time — alongside small Buddhist shrines that locals maintain inside some of the chambers, which is common practice at cave sites across northern Thailand. Lighting is basic: some sections have installed lights, others don’t, so a torch is worth carrying even if you don’t strictly need one for the main walkway. The park also runs a short nature-study trail through the surrounding forest, home to a couple of plants that are genuinely uncommon in the area — chan pha, a native Dracaena, and euang phueng, a wild orchid — both flagged on the park’s own signage. Most visitors treat it as a half-day outing from Nan combined with the wider Nan-Pua road, rather than a stop that needs a whole morning on its own.

Insider Tip: Go early — the caves stay cool and humid regardless of the hour, but the walk in from the car park is exposed, and mornings avoid both the heat and the crowds that build on weekends.

Watch out: Surfaces inside the caves get uneven and occasionally slick; decent grip on your shoes matters more here than a flashlight does. A few passages are narrow enough to feel tight if you’re not comfortable in enclosed spaces.

The park has a car park and public restrooms, and access is year-round — no seasonal closures. There’s no public transport link, so it’s a self-drive or hired-car trip from Nan town. Dress reasonably modestly given the shrines inside, though this isn’t a temple in the formal sense and there’s no strict dress code enforced. Pair it with other stops on the Nan-Pua road if you’re heading further north — this is a short detour rather than a destination that needs a dedicated half-day.
