Wildside Art Gallery

Wildside Art Gallery — known to locals as หอศิลป์พิงพฤกษ์, Ping Phruk Gallery — isn’t a contemporary art space with rotating shows. It’s a single-artist memorial gallery in Nan, built around the life’s work of Surdet Karalesen, a self-taught local painter named Outstanding Artist of Nan Province in 1999 for murals depicting the province’s history at Wat Ming Muang.

Karalesen died before the gallery he’d envisioned as a local arts and culture learning centre formally opened. His widow, Sopha Karalesen, took over the project and has run it since, keeping his paintings on display in the main exhibition building alongside his preserved studio — brushes, half-finished canvases, and the workspace left largely as he left it. It’s less a museum in the polished sense and more a family keeping an artist’s memory and body of work intact for visitors who happen to find it.

Insider Tip: Ask Khun Sopha or whoever’s on site about the Wat Ming Muang murals before you go — Karalesen’s history paintings there are the fuller expression of the same work you’ll see samples of in the gallery, and they’re free to view in the temple itself.

The gallery sits in Chai Sathan subdistrict on Nan’s outskirts, a modest building without the polish of a formal museum but with a personal, unhurried atmosphere that comes from being a private tribute rather than an institution. Don’t expect placards on international art movements or curatorial essays — what you get is a direct look at one regional painter’s work and the domestic space he made it in.

Watch out: This is a small, single-room-scale gallery, not a half-day destination — pair it with other stops in Nan rather than building a trip around it alone, and call ahead if you’re visiting outside normal hours since it’s family-run rather than staffed full-time.

Admission is free and the gallery is open daily, roughly 8 AM to 6 PM. Photography of the paintings is generally fine without flash — ask on arrival, since the rules are set informally by whoever’s minding the space that day.
