Than Tip Waterfall

Than Tip Waterfall drops around five metres over a series of broad limestone shelves in Prachantakham district, Prachin Buri — a short, easy walk from the car park rather than a jungle trek. Entry costs a flat 20 THB per person. The shallow, stepped pools make it more of a wading-and-picnicking spot than a plunge-pool waterfall, which is exactly why local families treat it as a weekend outing rather than a hike.

The water spreads across wide, mostly flat rock platforms before narrowing into small drops between pools — shallow enough in most sections for children to wade safely, with a few deeper pockets where the current picks up after rain. Trees line both banks, filtering the afternoon light, and the rock shelves themselves double as seating once you’ve paid for a mat or plastic chair from the vendors near the entrance. During certain festival periods the falls are strung with coloured lights for evening visits, a local touch that’s worth asking about if you’re timing a trip around it — it isn’t a nightly fixture.

Weekends bring the biggest crowds, with extended families spreading out picnic mats across the flat stone and kids splashing between the shallow tiers. It’s a genuinely local scene rather than a tour-bus stop — English signage is minimal and the vendors selling grilled chicken and som tam near the car park cater to Thai day-trippers. Weekday mornings are considerably quieter if you’d rather have a pool to yourself.

Insider Tip: Bring cash for the 20 THB entry and chair rental — there’s no card payment at a site this small, and the nearest ATM is back in Prachantakham town.

Watch out: The limestone shelves get slick with algae once wet, and there’s no lifeguard or barrier around the deeper pockets. Water shoes make the crossing between pools far less treacherous than bare feet.

Visit from June through November when the rains keep the shelves running; by the height of the dry season (March-April) the flow can drop to a trickle across the wider platforms. The site sits inside the broader Khao Yai tourism region alongside the national park’s better-known falls — pair it with Haew Narok Waterfall or Heo Suwat Waterfall if you’re routing through on a wider Khao Yai loop, though Than Tip itself sits well outside the park boundary in Prachin Buri.
