Vietnamese Communities 5-Junction is a morning market and residential quarter in central Mukdahan, home to families who settled here after fleeing conflict in Vietnam and French Indochina through the mid-20th century. It is free to browse and sits inside Mukdahan town, an easy walk or short tuk-tuk ride from the riverside.

Go early — most of what makes the “5-Junction” worth a stop is the breakfast market, and stalls start closing by around 9 AM. Vendors sell Vietnamese-Thai dishes rarely found elsewhere in the province: khao piak (a thick rice noodle soup), kuay jub yuan (rolled rice-noodle soup in a peppery broth), moo yor (Vietnamese-style steamed pork sausage), and khao tom wrapped in banana leaf. Vietnamese and Thai are both spoken along the stalls, and the food is the clearest sign of the neighbourhood’s roots — this is a working market that happens to be Vietnamese, not a curated cultural display.

Beyond the market, the area is mostly residential streets — a mix of older wooden shophouses and newer Thai-style homes — rather than a formal sightseeing circuit. There is no single monument or temple that anchors a visit; the draw is the food and the chance to see a Vietnamese-Thai community that predates Mukdahan’s tourist infrastructure by decades.
