Ho Kaeo Mukdahan

Ho Kaeo Mukdahan is a 65.5-metre observation tower on the Mekong riverfront, built in 1996 to mark King Bhumibol’s Golden Jubilee — the 50th anniversary of his reign. It’s a secular landmark and museum, not a temple, despite the tapered spire that makes it look pagoda-like from a distance. Entry is 30 THB for Thai adults and 50 THB for foreign adults, open daily 08:00–18:00.

The building has 7 levels: a two-storey base housing displays on Mukdahan’s local history and culture, a tower core running from the third to sixth floor, and a glass-walled observation gallery with a dome at the top. From up there, the views run across the Mekong River valley — fishing boats on the water, the town spread out below, and Savannakhet on the Laos side, linked by the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.

Mukdahan is one of a handful of Thai towns that sit directly on the Mekong border with Laos, and the tower doubles as the province’s most visible symbol — it appears on postcards and provincial signage across the region. The base-floor exhibits cover Mukdahan’s history and Isaan heritage, giving context before you head up to the viewing gallery. It’s a quieter, more local experience than the bigger river-crossing markets nearby, and worth the climb even outside sunset hours if the sky is clear.

Insider Tip: Go for sunset — the light over the river and the Laos skyline is the best reason to make the climb, and temperatures are far more comfortable than a midday visit.

The tower sits in Mueang Mukdahan district, an easy tuk-tuk or motorbike ride from the town centre. Bring water and sun protection if you’re visiting midday — the observation deck is exposed. Combine it with Indochina Market nearby, Mukdahan’s main cross-border trading market, or a look at the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge itself.
