Wang Lang Market

Wang Lang Market runs about 300 metres along Wang Lang Road in Bangkok Noi, from the Chao Phraya Express Boat’s Wang Lang (Siriraj) pier back toward Arun Amarin Road. It sits directly beside Siriraj Hospital, which shapes the crowd as much as the river does — nurses, students, and hospital visitors shop here alongside longtime residents, not tour groups. Entry is free; you only pay for what you buy, and stalls run daily from roughly 08:00 to 18:00, busiest between 10:00 and 17:00.

The name comes from an actual palace on this site — Wang Lang, meaning “rear palace,” was the early Rattanakosin-period residence of Prince Anurak Devesh. Fragments of the old palace wall are said to survive nearby, though there’s no marked ruin to visit; the history lives mostly in the street name now. That’s a genuine coincidence worth noting: Ayutthaya has its own, unrelated Wang Lang (Rear Palace) site roughly 80 kilometres north, built for a different prince in a different century. The two are easy to conflate online but have nothing to do with each other beyond the name.

What you’ll actually find is a working neighbourhood market with a strong southern Thai food identity — curries and stir-fries with the sharper, spicier profile that distinguishes southern cooking from central Thai dishes, plus noodle stalls, bakeries, a few sushi counters, and clothing and household stands squeezed into the narrow lane. It’s more mixed-use than a pure wet market: fashion boutiques and hair salons sit between the food stalls, reflecting the hospital-district foot traffic as much as any tourist draw.

Insider Tip: Eat where the hospital staff eat — the stalls with a lunchtime queue of Siriraj uniforms are a reliable shortcut to the better food, especially for southern curries.

Watch out: The lane floods with foot traffic at midday when hospital shifts change; if you want to actually move rather than shuffle, come before 10:00 or after 17:00.

Cash is standard — few stalls take cards — and the walkways can be wet from ice and washing water, so skip the sandals. The market connects easily to a river-crossing day: cross by ferry to Tha Chang for the Grand Palace side, or walk to the National Museum of Royal Barges and Wat Rakhangkhositaram Woramahawihan, both a short walk away in the same Bangkok Noi riverside pocket of Bangkok.
