Wang Tum Waterfall

Wang Tum Waterfall is less a swimming spot than a working abseiling site: a roughly 40-metre single-drop cascade in Phetchabun’s Khao Kho district that the local Khao Kho Explorer group runs as a guided rope-descent activity, complete with helmets, harnesses, life jackets, and knee pads. It’s one of the newer adventure-tourism additions on Khao Kho, pairing the physical challenge of climbing down a live waterfall face with the area’s better-known ecotourism draws.

Access alone sets the tone for the visit. The approach road from Ban Dong Long village requires a 4WD vehicle, and even then the final stretch is on foot — about 500 metres scrambling over rocks and through streambeds before the falls come into view. That’s part of why the site stays uncrowded: this isn’t a roadside stop, and the operators keep it that way by running abseiling only on weekends, across four scheduled sessions (08:00, 09:00, 13:00, and 14:00), each capped in group size. Weekday access exists but only for pre-arranged groups who book in advance.

The name has a local legend behind it: villagers say that more than a century ago, someone set an eel trap (a “tum”) in the pool below the falls, and when they went to retrieve it, the trap’s neck had been sheared clean off by the force of the water — hence “Wang Tum,” the pool of the (broken) trap. Whether or not that’s literally true, it’s the story locals tell, and it fits the site’s character: a working, unpolished corner of Khao Kho rather than a manicured park waterfall.

Insider Tip: Book the 08:00 slot if the choice is available — cooler morning temperatures make the climb back up from the pool noticeably more comfortable than the 13:00/14:00 sessions.

Watch out: This is not a casual dip-and-picnic waterfall. Without a booked abseiling session or a group arrangement, there’s little to do at the site beyond viewing it from a distance, and the approach road is genuinely rough — don’t attempt it in a standard sedan.

Pack a change of clothes and a dry bag for phones and wallets — the descent puts you directly under moving water, and the operators’ gear covers safety, not keeping your belongings dry. Because access runs through Khao Kho National Park land, this pairs naturally with a wider Khao Kho itinerary — the strawberry farms and viewpoints around Khao Kho town are a manageable drive from Ban Dong Long if the waterfall session is only part of the day.
