Wat Khao Suwan Khiri Ancient Remains

Wat Khao Suwan Khiri’s brick stupa marks the highest point of Khao Phanom Phloeng, a hill inside the walled old city of Sukhothai’s Si Satchanalai Historical Park. It’s a short, steep climb up from the surrounding ruins to reach it, and the payoff is less about the chedi itself — a modest, weathered structure — than the vantage point: from the summit you can see over the historical park’s temple clusters and the Yom River curling past the old city walls.

Wat Khao Phanom Phloeng sits about 200 metres east along the same hilltop, sharing the ridge with Suwan Khiri’s stupa — together the two mark the high ground the ancient city’s planners chose for its most visible religious structures. Little remains of Suwan Khiri beyond the brick core of its chedi and scattered laterite fragments; there’s no surviving viharn or Buddha images here, so this is a stop for the climb and the view rather than detailed architecture.

The climb itself is short but genuinely steep in places, on uneven stone steps with no handrail for most of the ascent — sturdy shoes matter more here than at the flat ruins below. Early morning is the best time for both the light over the valley and cooler conditions for the climb; by midday the exposed hilltop offers no shade.

Entry is covered by Si Satchanalai’s Central Zone ticket — 200 THB for foreign visitors, 20 THB for Thai nationals — the same pass that gets you into Wat Nang Phaya and the park’s other central ruins, rather than a separate charge for the climb. Insider Tip: Climb it early or late in the day — direct midday sun on the exposed hilltop makes the ascent considerably harder than the distance alone suggests.
